Home Dialysis

Home Dialysis is a treatment option for individuals with kidney failure that will allow them to perform dialysis in the comfort of their own home. This therapy offers a more flexible treatment schedule, a less restrictive diet, improved health outcomes, and less recovery post dialysis.

There are two ways to do home dialysis:

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is a needleless treatment that uses the body’s own peritoneal membrane to filter waste products and remove excess fluids. This can be done either during the day or at night while sleeping—whatever works best for each person’s individual situation.

Home Hemodialysis (HHD) is blood dialysis done at home instead of at the clinic. This therapy uses a smaller, more user‑friendly cycler that takes waste products and excess fluid from the body. This therapy is done with a care partner.

Both therapies require training that is provided at the Dubuque office. Training is customized to meet each patient's individual needs.

Patients that are dialyzed at home will have regular communication with their doctor, nurses, dietitian, and social worker just like they do in center. A monthly clinic visit is required and on‑call support is available 24/7.
